Harmony is in self-discovery.

Welcome soulful seekers, welcome to Atharva Ayurvedic Wellness, a place for ancient wisdom of sages, where we embark on a journey of self-discovery, wellness, and the transformative power of the ancient philosophies. I started to learn yoga at the age of 18, with the questions to know about myself, who am I, and what is the purpose of my life. I was fortunate to find a wise teacher who is a real yogi (Though he not in this material world, he is alive for me ). I remember his words about yoga, he used to say that yoga is the solution of your all questions. I didn’t realize deep meaning of that sentence but once I was reading Bhagvad Gita and read one sentence that the solutions of man’s all questions is within the man, only thing we need to go deep into ourselves to find the solution. then I realized the meaning of thy words. he was telling me to connect with the power within me. to connect with the real self is yoga.
Yoga is widely accepted allover the world. this ancient knowledge is renowned for relieving stress and making life easier if it is learnt thoroughly. it teaches us the real meaning of life and how we can create harmony from within to without. generally people take interest in yoga to increase their physical flexibility but it is much more then surface level. yoga helps a true learner to increase psychological flexibility, which allows people to adapt to changes in the external environment and react in new creative and healthy ways that align with an individual’s goals and values. staying in the present moment and being open to experiencing whatever thoughts or feelings may arise, and then take action that is aligned with our values. this goals and values should be for one’s true self not for the external self.
How we can define Yoga?
in Bhagvad Gita yoga is defined as योगः कर्मसु कौशलम् and समत्वं योग उच्यते. the first definition योगः कर्मसु कौशलम् which translates yoga is mastery in actions. this is not simple as we consider, deep meaning of योगः कर्मसु कौशलम् is Yoga is Actions with skills and actions are only those actions which are performed without any attachment or any desires. समत्वं योग उच्यते means to maintain the same stage everywhere and in all situation means to remain calm, balanced in all favorable or discomfort condition. weather it be happiness, unhappiness, profit or loss, when someone can maintain the stage of calmness that is yoga.
Patanjali, master of Yoga and an author of Yogasutra has defined Yoga as योगश्चित्तवृत्ति निरोधः which translates Yoga is cessation of mind and whirlpool of thoughts. that means yoga is a stage when the ongoing whirlpool of thoughts in the mind completely stops. which is known as Samadhi or super stage of consciousness. this stage can be achieved by practicing numerous yoga practices.
What is Mind? what are the functions of mind?
in simple answer we can say mind is responsible for any actions performed by an individual. any actions performed by senses will be perceived only if mind is there. if we look at one object but our mind is thinking about something different then we won’t perceive the image at where we are looking. though the object and subject are there, knowledge will only be perceived with the presence of mind. so mind is the cause of any actions performed by a person. now we will have question, if mind and Atma (soul) is same? because till soul is in a body all the functions will be performed, if soul is not in the body then no actions. it is not easy to know the soul and mind separately, because in the absence of anyone of these the other can not be known. Soul is the cause of consciousness or aliveness in the body and mind is the cause of all the actions of this living body. practically the feeling of “I” , I am doing or i am seeing all those feelings of I, me and mine is because of Mind.
Now let us try to understand where the mind comes from or how the mind is originated. to understand mind’s origin, we will need to understand the three Gunas, which are Satva, Raja and Tama. for our understanding Gunas can be described as the qualities (Though qualities are not the correct translation of Guans). when I use creation word that applies to the creation of the universe and creation of a micro universe. so any living organism is a micro universe. before the creation, the three gunas were in balanced stage but at the time of creation the three gunas gets imbalanced and Satva guna gets increased and that stage is considered as the origin of mind. that is why mind is also named as (सत्वो बहुला) satvobahula. in philosophies, mind has been described as a satvik result of nature(prakruti). as nature or prakruti is trigunatmaka (contains three gunas) that is why mind is also trigunatmaka, so mind contains three gunas, each gunas have unique properties. mind has three types based on the majority of gunas. for example when Satva is major that shows the attributes like pureness, kindness, helpful, content, Raja major is passion, desires, attachments to the material world and tama major is laziness, ignorance. mind has all the three gunas in some extent based on the proportion of each guna the nature of the person is known. there is also a description of one more type which has only Satva guna and that is the stage of super stage of consciousness which is described as Samadhi in philosophies of Yoga, in this stage there is no existence of worries, happiness, unhappiness and no attachments. Yogis have described mind with the example of lake, as the water of lake is calm but a very small particle in the water can produce waves, same way a minor thought can create disturbance or waves in mind. this mind is the medium of expression of the consciousness. Atma(soul) takes recourse of the nature (Prakruti) to enjoy the material subjects and mind is originated from Prakruti so mind captures subjects for the consciousness. according to one philosopher, when the mind connects with the soul, the soul starts to suffer as per the instincts of the mind like happiness or sorrow and many more. that is why it is said that mind and soul are apart from each other but no one can exist in the absence of the other. soul suffers as per the Samasakara or attachments of the mind, the impressions of the actions performed in the past are stored in the our mind and from time to time this Samsakara or attachments manifests as an actions, and it is mind’s job to display these Samsakara. if the samsakara are impure the actions will be corrupted and impure so periodically we need to clean the past samsakara, and Samsakara can be cleaned by thorough Yoga practices. if these past Samsakara are not cleaned then the brightness of soul wont come out and that is explained by the example of lantern, if the glass is not clean the llight of lantern will not be as bright as if the glass is clean, if we clean the glass the brightness of the light will come out. so to display the light of soul the past samasakaras needs to clean before it sticks to the mind and obstruct to shine the light of soul.
So Yoga is not only doing Asanas but it is all about cleansing the mind and body to reflect the brightness of the soul. once the brightness of the soul comes out, the decisions will be pure and neutral, that will lead to better actions and happiness from all over. so we do not need to find harmony from the external world, because it is already within. just go deep into yourself and dig out the solutions of your all questions.
