Fatty Liver and Ayurveda.

Liver which is approximately of one kilogram of weight, and which is considered as a chemical factory of body which works 24 hours. Everything that we consume through any parts of our body is processed by the liver.

Non-Alcoholic fatty liver diseases is the most common cause of the liver diseases all over the world. Forty-seven people from  every 1000 people are suffering from NAFLD. Men are more prone to fatty liver diseases then female. In these diseases fat accumulates in the liver, when fat builds up more than five percent of the liver then it is considered as a fatty liver. That causes of malfunctions of the liver. Which is caused by excess intake of fat, sugar, alcohol, and immobile lifestyle.  Which can be reversed by healthy diet and lifestyle. But if neglected and not treated it can be harmful.

Now, as we learnt in the first paragraph, liver is the processor of the food we take in. if the liver functions are altered because of excess storage of fat, it will not be able to process the fat again and more and more accumulation of fat will take place. Basically, cause and effect are the same in the liver diseases.

There are two types of fatty liver diseases. Alcoholic liver steatosis and non-alcoholic steatosis. Both FLD alters the liver functions, but Alcoholic Liver steatosis have more severe symptoms like jaundice, asities, spider veins and many more.

Alcoholic liver diseases can be more serious if not treated and can have prognosis of Alcoholic fatty liver which is the first stage which can be reversed by stopping alcohol intake, Alcoholic hepatitis is the second stage which is caused by chronic alcoholism, and cirrhosis of liver, which is severe and non reversible, but lifespan can be increased with stopping alcohol intake.

Non-Alcoholic fatty liver diseases can be divided into four types. Fatty liver, which is very common now a days, with not serious complications. Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis or NASH, NASH is complicated NAFLD. Fibrosis and Cirrhosis.

Ayurvedic pathology for fatty liver diseases:  As per Ayurveda, liver is the origin of Pitta and pitta is the main energy which keeps normal functioning of liver. Because of Kapha aggravating diet and lifestyle when Kapha aggravates that alters normal functions of pitta that results in malfunctioning of liver. Aggravated kapha covers pitta (Kaphavrutta pitta) resulting abnormal functions of the liver.

Causes: Alcohol, fatty food, lake of exercise, day sleep, excessive sweet, salt taste food intake are the main causes of liver diseases. Beside this chemical consumption, genetics, obesity, Diabetes, can be the cause of liver issues.

Symptoms: Abdominal pain, loss of appetite, bloating, fatigue and tiredness, weight loss, yellow skin-urine-sclera, oedema are the main symptoms.

Ayurvedic management of fatty liver diseases:

  • Healthy Diet, lifestyle management and regular exercise can help to reverse the fatty liver issues in most uncomplicated cases. Less fat contains, sugar free and fermentation free diet can help to manage the fatty liver issues.
  • Vitamin E rich diet like Almond (moderate), sunflower seed, broccoli, carrot, spinach, cabbage, beets, can be helpful.
  • Long pepper powder with honey can be helpful in FLD.
  • Make a mixture of Cardamom powder, cumin seed powder, bhuiamalaki powder and sugar taking in equal amount and take ¾ teaspoon everyday with half a teaspoon of ghee.
  • Aloe e vera gel, papaya can help.
  • Avoid Alcohol.
  • Barley is the best meal.


Ayurvedic herbs:

  • Guduchyadi Kashaya: 15 ml mixed with honey once a day.
  • Kutaki (Picrorhizia Kurroa) : ¼ teaspoon with 1 teaspoon of honey.
  • Triphaladi Kashaya: 10 ml twice a day with honey.
  • Panchakarma after proper assessment.
  • Periodically Liver cleanse is the best way to prevent liver issues.
