Ayurveda has described obesity or sthaulya as disorder of fat metabolism . It is known as Medoroga .  which is caused by the aggravation of Kapha. Kapha is an Ayurvedic humor which is dense, heavy, slow, sticky, wet and cold in nature. It governs all structure and lubrication in the mind and body apart from controlling weight and formation of all the seven tissues – nutritive fluids, blood, fat, muscles, bones, marrow and reproductive tissues.  Charaka has statde that a person is obese when adipose and muscles tissues make the hips , abdomen and breast  pendulous and his or her vitality is lower than body size might lead you to expect .
Obesity is the result of disturbance in the Agnis  -both jatharagni and dhatvagni of fatty tissues .This impaired digestive fire produces Ama which disturbs fatty tissues and blocks their proper reformation .
The fatty tissues accumulated in the body causes obesity .Accumulated fat aggravates  vata ,which in turns increases appetite ,so person eats more and vicious cycle continues .Obesity can occur in people with any  body type of  constitutions .
People who have Kapha type of body constitution are the most susceptible to  obesity because their metabolism is very slow .They also feel relaxed in stress after having food .
people with pitta constitution usually have large appetite .how ever their metabolism is rapid ,they have fewer tendencies to develop obesity then people with Kapha body constitution .
The people whose body type is Vatta ,obesity is rare and their weight fluctuates greatly .They usually eat to provide security against nervousness or anxiety .
Ayurvedic way of management obesity .
The Ayurvedic line of treatment for obesity begins with the pacification of Kapha Dosha. This can be done by eliminating Kapha-aggravating foods from the diet. Next, the treatment also focuses on cleansing of the Medovahi channels through cleansing herbs so that excess weight can be reduced.
Principles of treatment
Apatarpana, rukshana ,shodhana,Kapha-medohar chikitsa .
Panchakarma
Udvartana-Dry powder massage with dry and hot herbal powder .
Snehana-(Massage)- external and internal oliation using medicated oil .
Swedana*( bolus steam)- pinda sweda of herbal powder .
Home Remedies

  • Drink mint tea or make a paste of green mint with some simple spices and eat during meals.
  • Eat vegetables such as bitter gourd and drumsticks to control obesity.
  • Take one teaspoonful of fresh honey and mix with a half of lime juice in a glass of lukewarm water. Take several times a day at regular intervals. You can fast on this drink during the day without the loss of energy. Highly effective in obesity.

Pathya-Green vegetables ,use of barley and whole wheat .regular exercise ,brisk walk for 40 minutes a day ,regular powder massage .panchakarma  every six month .
Apathya- Avoid sweet ,sour ,salty,oily .cold food .
